Malignant Mesothelioma Information

Malignant mesothelioma asbestos is a rare type of cancer affecting the mesothelial tissue lining of three of the body's largest cavities: the pleura (lung cavity), the peritoneum (abdominal cavity) and the pericardium (heart sac). There are three distinct types of mesothelioma cancer, each affecting a different section of the mesothelium:

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of the disease, accounting for an approximate 75% of all documented cases. The disease is often confused with asbestos lung cancer because of the close proximity of the two. Asbestos lung cancer affects the parenchymal tissue of the lung, while pleural mesothelioma affects the mesothelial tissue that lines the lung cavity.

Mesothelioma symptoms can vary dependent on the type that the sufferer has contracted; however, the most common presenting symptom of malignant mesothelioma is chronic chest pain that results from a buildup of fluid inside the pleural space.

Mesothelioma treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, photodynamic therapy, immunotherapy and gene therapy; however, none have been able to successfully treat the aggressively malignant disease.

Causes of mesothelioma have been limited to asbestos exposure. Asbestos product manufacturers were aware of the health hazards of asbestos exposure long before the carcinogenic mineral was regulated under section 112 of the Clean Air Act, though they chose to place business and profits ahead of employee health. Asbestos litigation is the result of such negligence; mesothelioma lawsuits can be handled by an asbestos attorney or mesothelioma attorney alike (Mesothelioma lawyers are more specialized in terms of handling mesothelioma litigation).
